چکیده

Recognition of musical instruments in multi-instrumental, polyphonic music, is a difficult challenge which is yet far from being solved. Successful instrument recognition techniques in solos (monophonic or polyphonic recordings of single instruments) can help to deal with this task. We introduce an instrument recognition process in solo recordings of a set of instruments (bassoon, clarinet, flute, guitar, piano, cello and violin), which yields a high recognition rate. A large and very diverse solo database (108 different solos, all by different performers) is used in order to encompass the different sound possibilities of each instrument and evaluate the generalization ability of the classification process. First we bring classification results using a very extensive collection of features (62 different feature types), and then use our GDE feature selection algorithm to select a smaller feature set with a relatively short computation time, which allows us to perform instrument recognition in solos in real-time, with only a slight decrease in recognition rate. We demonstrate that our real-time solo classifier can also be useful for instrument recognition in duet performances.

Large Scale Musical Instrument Identification

In this paper, automatic musical instrument identification using a variety of classifiers is addressed. Experiments are performed on a large set of recordings that stem from 20 instrument classes. Several features from general audio data classification applications as well as MPEG-7 descriptors are measured for 1000 recordings. Branch-and-bound feature selection is applied in order to select th...

Biomimetic spectro-temporal features for music instrument recognition in isolated notes and solo phrases

The identity of musical instruments is reflected in the acoustic attributes of musical notes played with them. Recently, it has been argued that these characteristics of musical identity (or timbre) can be best captured through an analysis that encompasses both time and frequency domains; with a focus on the modulations or changes in the signal in the spectrotemporal space. This representation ...

North Indian Classical Music’s Singer Identification by Timbre Recognition using MIR Toolbox

Timbre recognition has always been associated with musical instrument identification. In music information retrieval (MIR) community there has always been increasing interest in identifying singers and identifying the musical instruments. There can be unending debate on, whether to consider human throat as a kind of musical instrument generating sound through air pressure and vibration or not. ...

Quality of Musical Instrument Sound Identification for Various Levels of Accompanying Sounds

Research on automatic identification of musical instrument sounds has already been performed through last years, but mainly for monophonic singular sounds. In this paper we work on identification of musical instrument in polyphonic environment, with added accompanying orchestral sounds for the training purposes, and using mixes of two instrument sounds for testing. Four instruments of definite ...

Mining Audio Data for Multiple Instrument Recognition in Classical Music

This paper addresses the problem of identification of multiple musical instruments in polyphonic recordings of classical music. A set of binary random forests was used as a classifier, and each random forest was trained to recognize the target class of sounds. Training data were prepared in two versions, one based on single sounds and their mixes, and the other based on sound frames taken from ...
